Our commitment to a welcoming experience for everyone
Our Commitment
Zen Hand-crafted Udon is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We continually work to improve the user experience for everyone and apply the relevant accessibility standards to our website.
The quiet warmth of a good bowl of udon should be open to all — at our table on South Murphy Avenue, and on every page of our site.
Conformance Status
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. WCAG defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA.
zen-udon.com is designed to be in substantial conformance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. "Substantial conformance" means that some parts of the content may not fully conform to the accessibility standard at this time, and we are actively working to address them.
Measures We Have Taken
To make our website accessible, we have implemented the following:
- Semantic HTML structure with proper headings, landmarks, and lists
- Descriptive alternative text for meaningful images, and decorative images marked as such for screen readers
- Keyboard navigation support, including a "skip to main content" link and visible focus indicators
- WAI-ARIA labels and roles for interactive components such as the menu tabs and contact form
- Color contrast that meets WCAG AA between text and background
- Full food menu and sake menu presented as accessible HTML text — readable by screen readers — with downloadable PDF versions as a secondary option
- Phone numbers as
tel:links and email asmailto:links for easy contact on mobile devices - The page language set explicitly to English, with Japanese passages marked with
lang="ja"for accurate screen-reader pronunciation - Responsive design that supports zoom up to 200% without loss of content or functionality
- Structured data (schema.org) for restaurant information, hours, and menu
Known Limitations
Despite our best efforts, some content may not be fully accessible:
- PDF downloads. Our food menu and sake menu PDFs are provided primarily for printing and visual layout, and may not be fully tagged for screen readers. The full content of both menus is also available as accessible HTML text on our Menu page and Sake page — these are the recommended ways to browse our offerings with a screen reader.
- Printed-style menu page. Our main Menu page uses a print-inspired layout. While the underlying content is structured as HTML and readable by screen readers, the visual presentation is optimized for sighted visitors. We are continuing to improve the screen-reader flow.
- Third-party content. Some embedded content from external services (e.g., Google Maps, Square Online Ordering, DoorDash) is outside our direct control, and its accessibility depends on the third-party provider.
